Polycyhemia rubra vera

PRV is a relatively common myeloproliferative disorder whose cardinal feature is an absolute increase in the red blood cell mass. Erythrocytosis is usually accompanied by significant thrombocytosis. The molecular biology and pathophysiology of PRV are becoming increasingly well understood. It is an important condition because careful attention to management of the red cell mass, symptomatology and anticipation of complications are conducive to a normal and comfortable lifespan. However, "a significant minority of physicians undertreat erythrocytosis, and little consensus exists regarding the treatment of thrombocytosis." ......... and this needs to be addressed (BLOOD 2002).
